One of my freelance jobs for the last seven years has been working for Fox Sports during the MLB post season. For the first five years I was one of the primary EVS operators. For the last two years I've been working on a Final Cut Pro system and an EVS XT to edit bumpers. Producer Judy Hoang and I edit footage from the game we are watching to create interesting and fun :10 to :30 second visual stories that the production team uses to return the audience from commercial breaks.
Here is photo of our set up in San Francisco (thank you to Charles Meyer of Apple for the use of the photo.)
Seven of the eight color monitors are live cameras, and one is Fox Program. The monitor in black, third from the left is a preview of the output of the FCP system.
All the monitoring on the right is related to the EVS XT.
The EVS XT network simultaneously records all of the cameras continuously. Think of it as the best Tivo ever.
My favorite thing about this work is combining two distinct technologies to solve a problem. How do we do a fairly fine edit with short turnarounds for a live event?
Access to the footage and a fast edit comes from EVS.
Image and audio control comes from FCP.
The challenge for all of us is to see how to combine our tools in unique ways to create new solutions.
What tools do you work with? Can you find new ways to leverage the strengths of those tools?
This post by Frank Capria, expands this idea beyond tools. Being open to combining distinct ideas can yield innovation, and sometimes, great success.
